The Ultimate Guide to All EDIFICEs — composed by Experts

Men’s strict watches are not only killer small hands minimalism for thousands of dollars, not only elite brands and many more “not only”. Casio has its own understanding of watches that embody all the same masculine rigor, unique technologies, a new format for using functions and high-quality, but inexpensive materials. Let’s talk about the model ECB-900DB-1BER on the blog of fans of Casio.

Casio ECB-900 Series

In the premium segment of the Edifice brand, everything is more or less stable: the watch almost always gets a restrained image with elements of motor sport, an abundance of additional windows and something similar to a speedometer. So it was with the ECB-800 [our review: ECB-800DB-1A – the target lap time for professional riders] and a similar one is observed in today’s hero.

I will not say that it becomes boring to look at the clock, no. Despite the predictability of some stylistic elements, each new Edifice flagship still evokes pleasant emotions.

Design. I cannot but note a nice combination of blue color shades that focus on the important details of the dial: tachymeter scale, arcs of additional functional windows and a second hand.

The hue is very light, does not attract attention, but it definitely gives the watch its tonal zest. I don’t know how to perceive the redistribution of electronic windows [in comparison with one, but large] – it seems to be less convenient, but on the other hand – there is more space for analog solutions. In any case, everything here decides the matter of taste, because it does not particularly affect the functional part itself.

Functions Then, as usual, I decided to look into all the functionality of the ECB-900DB-1BER, and without the hints of the old-school instruction and the newfangled Edifice Connected application. So I’m trying to determine the complexity of what is happening from the point of view of a person with the basic concept of clock functionality. The first press of the MODE button puts the watch in stopwatch mode, the second into lap time mode [LAP]. At this stage, I realized the focus of the watch – the ECB-900 is sharpened for the Formula I world championship in ring racing. The insane accuracy of the stopwatch captures even thousandths of a second, and I generally hang on the lap time. Ok, now there is no need to look for instructions, but just install the Edifice Connected application to figure out the hidden potential of the model.

This is what the default watch features look like. As you can see, the lower right additional window [speedometer] does not perform any functions in the current time mode.

An interesting point – in the ECB-900DB-1BER there is a so-called crown, which performs two roles: 1. quick time correction, 2. bluetooth connection with a smartphone.

Why interesting? Because as usual, this problem could be solved with the MODE button [holding it for a few seconds longer]. Now, the button performs TWO functions, where a quick, light click on the head corrects the time with the exact time of the phone. Tested very comfortable.

Stopwatch mode activates all three additional windows including a speedometer. The logic of the work is as follows: we activate the stopwatch – as soon as your favorite team crosses one circle, you fix it by clicking on the lower right button – the speedometer window shows the average speed of the circle.

Further you can import the data of circles and superimpose them schematically for a detailed analysis. I caught myself thinking that I am describing similar functionality as in the ECB-800, but what can you do, they are very similar). Since for me it is still the first hours of such a plan, it became interesting to understand the speedometer. For example, how does the speedometer know the lap length to determine speed? Yes, I remembered the calculation formula from school)).

It’s very simple – you yourself choose the length of the distance, or the length of the circle.

With the lap length, everything is quite simple – the application already contains the values of the most popular locations of the championship, where you can only choose a ready-made value. Damn it, everything turned out to be very simple.

You didn’t ask yourself “why is this all?”, If there is Internet and you can see the speed on the phone screen in real time? And if there is no internet? And if you as a viewer and you do not have the Internet? And if you are a mechanic in a Mercedes stable? For some, this function will definitely be useful, and the watch is not only good as a stopwatch, right? The stopwatch with a speedometer is cool, no sport. Let’s go further [duplicate information from the ECB-800 review, since they are identical] …

For world time, you can choose one of 300 cities around the world – here I did not notice any special changes from EQB. You can select a city in three ways – tap on it on the map, enter a name in the search bar or select from the list.

There are 5 separate alarms in the watch, each of which can be set in one of three modes – one-time, daily and set to a specific alarm rule [for example, every month on a certain day and time]. It’s nice that the alarm clock can be renamed – not just AL1, AL2, etc.

With the timer, everything is simple – set the time, activated the countdown in hours. The measurement limit is 24 hours, like a stopwatch.

Technology. Besides the fact that the watch is “friendly” with the phone [which is already delighting usability], I would also note the presence of the following technologies: solar power [the battery is charged by light], Hand Shift [when you are, for example, in stopwatch mode – hands can take a neutral position (there is no automatic activation), so as not to interfere with reading], Power Saving [power saving mode – the clock “falls asleep” in the dark].

An important point – there is NO radio synchronization in the watch, only the synchronization with the phone is responsible for the accuracy, which can also be considered 99.99% accurate [if you only connect to the Internet once, the phone’s clock adjusts its time, which means that the ECB-900DB-1BER receives 99.99% reliable information].

Materials. If we talk about materials, then the ECB-900DB-1BER is definitely not the most premium product. Case, bezel, bracelet from ordinary, but high-quality stainless steel. Glass is mineral. The size [51.5 × 48 × 13.9 mm] is very acceptable. You can, of course, less, but even on my not the biggest wrist they look decent. Weight: 163 grams.

Backlight. Elegant backlight because two LEDs are used: separate for digital windows and separate for analog space. Ideal readability. I did not find an automatic response.

Conclusions

Edifice ECB-900DB-1BER proves its flagship provenance. The watch contains almost all the very best from Casio, although in appearance the watch remains true to the classic concept of watchmaking. A very advanced stopwatch with a speedometer is probably just a marketing chip [although I will not deny a small percentage of practical value], however, the same alarms, timers, world time are very convenient to set up and use. A bundle with a phone gives its fruits and a watch with the usual look of a “watch” turns into a real smart gadget with its own characteristics. No, they can hardly be called a smart watch. The Japanese have their own concept of “smartness”, and they also do not like to charge the watch with a socket [unlike other smart creations], and the ECB-900 does not even need to be properly charged. The choice is yours.
