Movement is life … We have been taught this since childhood. If earlier people moved, went in for sports, set goals and simply achieved them, now with the development of high technologies, the process of monitoring their performance has moved to a qualitatively new level. One of the “sports” assistants, namely the Baby-G BGS-100-9AER model with a pedometer, fell into my hands. Let’s try to figure out whether sports and watches are really so compatible.

Since we are talking about a sports accessory, what is the first requirement we make for it [if you do not take into account the functionality]? Right: convenience, size and weight. Opening the box and taking out the watch, I realized that they were simply created for an active lifestyle.

The case size, to put it mildly, surprised, I have never seen such a small watch. It’s about 45.2×42.6 x 13.3mm. Honestly, when you study the characteristics at the office. site or you look stock photos, specific figures speak little about. You need to see and feel. This watch is not just small, the BGS-100 can even be called miniature. I tried to put them on my hand, but as you guessed, nothing came of it. I had to try on my wife’s hand [she herself has a BGA-190 and BGA-160, so there is something to compare with]. Perfect for both women and children’s wrists.

Another clear advantage in favor of sports can be called the weight of the model – only 34 grams. The watch is almost not felt on the hand. It is possible that such a weight reduction was obtained not only due to size, but also through the use of a lighter variety of polyurethane and other materials.

It is noticeable that the manufacturer has worked hard on the design of the new item – although the dial is small, the readability is almost perfect. All the elements seem to be in place, there is a lot of information, but at the same time there is no feeling of congestion. There are arrows and an electronic scoreboard, and paired step indicators [about them a bit later], and pretty hour markers with a 3D effect. The inscription “Step Tracker” proudly flaunts in the center of the dial, reminding us of the main highlight of the model. Although the digital window is small, the data reading is quite distinct.

The strap is made of durable and flexible material [PUR – polyurethane], very pleasant to the touch. The color, although light green, is interspersed with a metallic look, which creates an effect of light shine. It looks interesting and unusual.

The bezel and strap holder are made of transparent polyurethane. The clasp is simple, plastic.

The buttons protrude enough for convenient pressing, and at the same time they do not give chance to be pressed while bending the wrist. Ribbed surface for better finger grip. The Adjust, Mode and Light buttons traditionally take their places, but the Search button in the lower right corner differs not only in appearance, but also received a whole submenu for pedometer functions. Finally got to the most delicious.

What does a pedometer do? The answer is simple: it counts the steps taken. Moreover, a special 3-axis sensor eliminates false swings by hand, thereby making it possible to obtain the most accurate step values. I will not analyze the working principle in detail, you can read our separate material on the pedometer. I will focus on the practical part.

Having carefully studied the instructions, I found out that you first need to configure the daily rate of steps. The default is 10,000, but I decided to set 5,000 [and so already for the whole day I was running over]. Setting the parameter does not take much time: pressing the Search button activates the pedometer submenu. As soon as the DATA indicator is displayed, hold down the Adjust button for a couple of seconds and set the desired value.

At the bottom of the electronic dial is the GOAL indicator. He is responsible for fulfilling the daily norm, and if he reaches the goal, he begins to blink. I thought there was a sound alert, but no [but it would be nice]. Moreover, it flashes in any mode, whether it is the current time or something else. Well, I won’t miss the fact of reaching 5000 steps.

The second hand is responsible for indicating the percentage of goal completion. The bezel marks percent completion with steps of 20%. After passing 2000 steps, the arrow indicated 40% [for this you need to go into pedometer mode]. Well, it works. By the way, you can see the exact number of steps taken by clicking the Search button. The electronic dial alternately displays the number of steps taken and the exact percentage of completion. I decided to check the correctness of the calculation – I took 200 steps, the clock showed 202. Super accuracy, as for me.

And what to do when you lay down on the sofa and did not fulfill the norm? The Japanese took care of this, having built in the watch a warning function about the lack of activity. And the warning is not only in the form of a flashing STEP! Indicator, but also a sound signal. In general, until I go 5000 steps, I can’t get a rest.

When walking, the pedometer indicators at the 7 o’clock position alternately flash with a second interval. As soon as you stop, the blinking stops. The watch has a pedometer graph, which is displayed directly in the current time mode [next to the date and month]. In this way, you can easily track your walking dynamics hourly [each column corresponds to one hour].

The pedometer has its own notebook. It stores data on steps for the current day and for the last 7 days. For each day there is a record of the fact of achieving or not achieving the goal. By clicking the Search button, you can go to the book and see what days the goal was reached. If I go 10,000 steps, my rate will be 200%. Well, you understand, the percentage will be more than 100, in case the norm is exceeded.

I am very pleased with the new “chip”. I did not expect such accuracy from the walk sensor and such a convenient implementation.

A stopwatch traditionally measures elapsed time and lap time. Up to 30 entries can be stored in memory. Well, but they could have done more [for example, the BGA-240 has 2 times more]. The positioning of both models is the same – sports.

The timer here can be set up to 100 minutes, without auto-repeat. Again, a bit weak [24 hours with the BGA-240]. Alarms, calendar, world clock and calendar – needless to say.

Now about the backlight. What, what, and she surprised me. The dial is illuminated by 2 bright LEDs: one on the side under the mark of 9 hours, and the second for the electronic display.

In complete darkness, without exception, all elements of the dial are clearly visible, and this is very pleasing. In general, the illumination is at the level of more expensive models with Super Illuminator. The arrows are coated with a luminescent coating, but it is mediocre.

There is no solar power in the watch, but the native battery will last 2 years. Since the watch is sports, the water resistance is also in order – 100 meters, you can take a shower and swim with a dive.

Conclusion

The BGS-100-9A pleasantly surprised in terms of size [compact], weight [light] and backlight [very bright]. Every detail of the dial is thought out to the smallest detail. The stopwatch and timer were not impressive, here the Kasiites were clearly greedy in favor of another feature – a pedometer. He is quite advanced, with a notebook, a reminder of the lack of activity and control of the purpose of the steps. No whistling with cloud synchronization, no additional cords – the watch is very independent. With the right approach, you can get tremendous benefits [in terms of activity]. Guys, you read us more, think about a good present for your soul mate [especially since holidays are coming soon, there is still time].
